Oil by Joe Ferrara
In Native American culture it is customary to refer to one’s elders as Grandfather or Grandmother even if there is no blood relation. In the time period represented in this painting, Canada was a commonwealth of England. The Natives were informed that they were subjects of the “Grandmother” across the “Big Water” which referred to Queen Victoria. The Candian Mounty was therefore often referred to as the “Grandmother’s warrior.”
Sadly this fine artist (Joe Ferrara) passed away in 2004. His legacy lives on in outstanding works such as this.
